02.01.02 Written Response – Positions Through Iterating

UNIT 2. BRIEF 1. WRITTEN RESPONSE

For Positions Through Iterating my exploration into commercial magazine editorial design in a hybrid world led me to iterate a magazine cover. Initially as a printed publication as 100 iterations, followed by a hybrid digital mobile-formatted based 50 iterations. My written response is therefore written as a magazine article (my medium), in the format of my 50 iterations (mobile), as a digital form https://readymag.website/u46120934/4755829/ (that doesn’t work on desktop as it was formatted for mobile) that then had to be exported as a PDF for the purpose of uploading in the required format for this brief.

The design of the written response is that of Grazia magazine’s (my iteration 00 in 100 iterations) digital iteration of it’s printed magazine, (highlighting the lack of editorial design in the digital version of the magazine).

The process of converting a mobile digital article into a PDF was laborious. You can export a PDF directly from Readymag (the digital space I created the bibliography in) but you have to pay for the privilege, so I screenshotted each section on my phone and rebuilt it in InDesign – the print lover tool of choice. I discovered in InDesign there is a limit of the length of a page, which is 15000px, so I could not create the scrolling page as one page in InDesign. So over three pages I recreated the mobile digital format. Of course the hyperlinks don’t work, exposing further limitations of this digital to print formatting. When I exported it as a PDF it chopped off 343px as that exceeded the PDF processing formation, so I adjusted the InDesign pages to 14376px which then exported as expected.

This process highlighted the inherent digital to print issues, as my project explored print to digital, and combining print and digital. This highlights my personal bias of one way thinking, thinking of how print works in digital over how digital works in print. I wonder why?
